Mosquitoes:

According to The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) ; Use insect repellents when you go outdoors. Repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, and some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products provide longer-lasting protection. To optimize safety and effectiveness, repellents should be used according to the label instructions.

According to the CDC, never use repellents over cuts, wounds or irritated skin.

Additionally, medsaape.com, mosquitoes transmit more diseases to humans than any other biting insect. They are the vectors responsible for transmitting several forms of viral encephalitis, yellow fever, dengue fever, bancroftian filariasis, and epidemic polyarthritis to humans; more than 700,000,000 people are infected yearly. Malaria, which is transmitted by the bite of a mosquito infected with the single-cell protozoan Plasmodium, is responsible for 3,000,000 deaths annually.

In the New England Journal of medicine in July 2002 reported the findings of the first scientific study regarding repelling mosquitoes. The scientific study compared a wide range of numerous products for their ineffectiveness in preventing mosquito bites. The majority of insect repellents containing herbal oils that have proven to be less effective than those containing DEET.

Mark Fradin and Jonathan Day of the University of Florida tested 17 nationally marketed mosquito repelling products under laboratory conditions. They asked 15 volunteers to stick a forearm coated with repellent into a cage containing 10 mosquitoes and observed how much time elapsed before the first bite. Products containing DEET repelled mosquitoes for the longest peroid. The products containing the highest content of lasted for longer periods of time. Products such as Off and Deep Woods, which contains 23.8 percent DEET, provided the longest-lasting protection, average of five hours in two minutes. By contrast, Avon Skin-So-Soft Bath Oil failed after 9.6 minutes, on average.

For decades rumor has held that Skin-So-Soft Bath Oil is an effective counter to mosquitoes, yet a 1993 Consumer Reports analysis found it ineffective for that purpose.
